Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President Benjamin Harrison
The Twenty-Third President of the United States of America
Served from 1889-1893
Lived 1833-1901
Party: Republican
Denomination: Presbyterian
President Benjamin Harrison’s family knew a bit about the United States Presidency, as his grandfather was the Ninth President, William Henry Harrison. As President, six states were admitted to the Union, and the establishment of the National Forest Reserves. This act in 1891 made him akin in conservation to that of the preeminent president and conservationist, Teddy Roosevelt.
President Harrison was a Presbyterian and very active in his community of faith. He taught Sunday School and was considered an accomplished Christian educator—something his later predecessor President Jimmy Carter would also be known for.
